Remember back when the Fitbit was a novel idea to tracking your steps? Now the market is full of options that have multiple fitness functions such as step counting, heart rate monitoring and they even tell time.
Next week, Apple will probably unveil an update to their latest offering: the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch has become quite popular–I know both of my technology-hungry boys have each bought one. And they probably don’t use it for fitness purposes.
But there are other fitness watches such as Runtastic, who was recently bought by Adidas. Sports apparel companies and Apple are not the only ones with offerings, TomTom, known for their GPS products has a runner watch that includes stopwatch, countdown, running information and performance comparison capabilities along with their GPS functionality. I’m sure that is to be competitive with Garmin, who puts out the Vivosmart and Vivoactive sports watch and wrist band.
What To Buy?
PC Magazine recently put out a review of fitness trackers in their Best Fitness Trackers for 2015 article. In the article, the author, Jill Duffy, recommends trying out an app prior to purchasing a wearable fitness tracking device. She also recommends to consider using a service such as Lumoid to try a tracker out before committing to purchasing it.
There are lots of different flavors and options with fitness trackers. According to Jill, you need to consider if you really need certain features and if they are of value before purchasing. If we assume the basic function is to measure our steps or running activity, some of the “beyond the basic” features include:
- Form factor – watch, bracelet, clip-on?
- Heart monitoring
- Sleep tracking
- Caffeine intake tracking
- Waterproof tracking
- Performance comparisons monitoring
- Blood pressure
- Calories consumed
- Stress level monitoring
Decisions, decisions and choices. Bottom line is that we all need to get moving. The gadgets and the gear are perky plus items to keep us on track.
